MAHA SHIVARATRI
On the night of the festival Maha Shivaratri the city of Kathmandu changes. A big festival in honour of the deity Shiva takes place in the center of the city, with a fair, sales booths and hoards of people. It is one of the most chaotic nights of the year, in an already chaotic city. They set up their sales booths at the festival grounds, selling anything from pots and pans to fabrics and clothes. One can wonder if the old values of the festival have been traded for consumerism, or if perhaps consumerism is an extention of the already complex superstitions surrounding Maha Shivaratri.
